How to get glowing skin ready for summer

Say goodbye to dark, rainy days, loungewear, and a dull complexion and hello to glowing skin. It is officially spring and hurtling towards summer, and the sun is starting to shine. Are you looking forward to ditching the hoodies and bad hair? Hair salons are officially open, ready to trim those dry ends – but what about your dry skin?

Trapped under jumpers, skin can appear dry and lacklustre, which isn’t great news as we start to shed the layers. With bare arms, legs and even shoulders on the horizon, it’s time to focus on feeling and looking great. But beyond hydration, a decent multivitamin, plenty of sleep and wearing a good sunscreen, what else can you do?

Glowing summer skin - Exfoliation

The build-up of dead skin cells can leave your skin looking dull and spotty. Get your skin ready for the warm sun by exfoliating your face and limbs to get a fresh summer skin look. It’s cheap and easy to make your own concoction to exfoliate your skin at home. Anything with fine granules can be used, for example sugar, salt, oats – mixed in with an olive oil, or similar, of your choice. Just rub it over your skin lightly to remove the dead cells and voila, glowing skin.

If all of this sounds messy and time consuming, there are plenty of exfoliators on offer at the shops for you to try, in a range of prices. For those who like to be pampered, however, try the Environ Tri Biobotanical Revival Masque. It enhances the skin's overall appearance, leaving your skin feeling smoother and more radiant. The Environ Hydrating Clay Masque absorbs oils from your face whilst gently polishing. This soft exfoliation improves the look of your skin on both your face and décolletage and can even be used as an overnight hydrating face mask.

Book an appointment at the Spa at the Avenue for an Environ Facial if you prefer the professional touch and some quality me-time.

Glowing skin secret – Vitamin C

Vitamin C really is key to great-looking skin. It has antioxidant properties, which combat a range of pollutants that make your skin look dull. It also promotes the production of collagen, which is essential for that plumped, healthy-looking skin look. It can even help reduce hyperpigmentation related to sun damage.

Improving your diet to include plenty of vitamin C-rich foods, such as oranges, broccoli, peppers and potato skins is a great start. Eating healthily all year round is an important part of having great-looking skin. If you need a helping hand, however, there are plenty of products out there that can help you out. Taking a vitamin C supplement, such as the Environ Skin Vit C capsules can help fast track you to better-looking skin.

Treat your newly exfoliated skin to a good-quality moisturiser, to combat dry skin and make it soft to the touch. A moisturiser packed with vitamin C, as you would expect, does great things for your skin, for example Environ’s Vitamin A, C & E Body Oil. This light oil is full of vitamins and antioxidants and can be used all over your body to make your skin soft and conditioned. With summer often exposing skin that has been swathed in winter clothes for months, this lotion gives your skin a big hit of moisture and helps combat uneven skin tone and sun damage.

Soft, hair-free skin

With bare legs and arms just around the corner, now’s the time to think about which bits of your body, if any, you’d like to go hair-free. Whether you choose the quick and cheap shave-in-the-shower option, or prefer the full salon experience, it is up to you and your own personal preferences.

Shaving is certainly the quick and easy option for legs, but regrowth can be tedious to keep up with. Waxing has the benefit of leaving you hair-free for longer, and hairs tend to eventually grow back finer. It is also better for itchy regrowth, a definite consideration when it comes to more intimate areas. The Avenue do a full range of waxing options, check out the Avenue’s Spa pricelist for full details.
